Pair of Girandole Candlesticks

Manufactured by Deitz and Company

Not on view

As depicted in these girandole candlesticks, Paul and Virginie strike the same pose as they do on the left side of the mantelpiece (L.2001.32a-j). The same print source was likely the inspiration for both designs. Girandole sets were popular among the middle class and were often decorated with scenes from contemporary literature. The Museum also owns a set with figures from James Fennimore Cooper’s “The Last of the Mohicans”.
