Bureau Table

American

Not on view

The Philadelphia origin of this bureau table is suggested because its case width is equal to its overall height, proportions that match a description in the 1772 Philadelphia Price Book. The prospect door, however, is tall and narrow in the mid-century manner. Most other known Philadelphia bureau tables have details which suggest a later, post–1765 date. The table's history of ownership in Middletown, Monmouth County, New Jersey, brings up the question of whether it was brought there from Philadelphia or made there by Philadelphia-trained craftsmen.
