Theatrical robe with dragons

China

Not on view

Robes decorated with dragons (mangpao) were worn by performers in roles such as king, chancellor, general, and high-ranking lady. This fine example is made of a high-quality brocade also used for dragon robes that functioned as official uniforms. The five-clawed dragon, a symbol of the emperor, further indicates that it was made for the imperial theater.

On view during Rotation 1 of exhibition from June 25, 2016 through January 13, 2017.
