This print reproduces "La Musique", a painting by Louis Ducis (incorrectly identified in inscription as F.C. Ducis), exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1822 and now at the Musée Municipal, Limoges. There is a related watercolor in the Louvre. It is one of a set of four works illustrating the arts of music, poetry, painting and sculpture through pairs of famous lovers. "La Musique" shows Mary Queen of Scots and her French secretary, David Rizzio. In this print Rizzio is turned into Pierre de Bocosel de Chatelard (or Chastelard), a previous secretary to the queen, whose indiscreet advances led to his execution in 1536.
