This colossal figure of Gautama represents the most popular Burmese form of the historical Buddha. As in most Southeast Asian images of Gautama, he is portrayed seated cross-legged with his left hand in his lap and his right hand gently touching the earth. Tripe skillfully conveys the sculpture’s monumentality, framing it against a landscape punctuated by vertical spires and towering palm trees.
