Produced as the frontispiece for the English translation of M. Mignet's The History of Mary, Queen of Scots, published in 1851. It is after a colored etching by Adolphe Pierre Riffaut, published in P.-G.-J Niel's "Portraits des personnages français les plus célèbres du XVIe siècle [...]" in 1848. Riffaut's etching reproduced a drawing in the Bibliothèque nationale de France by François Clouet (Paris, BNF, Estampes, Rés. Na 22).
