Necklace with 2 baboon amulets

Third Intermediate Period

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 126

The jewelry found on Henettawy’s mummy might have been made specifically for her burial. One of three linen cords found around her neck, this example is adorned with twenty-six knots and two gold baboon amulets. Denizens of Egypt’s deserts, baboons were associated with the rising sun and hence with the eternal solar cycle of death and rebirth. There are twelve knots on either side of the two amulets (with two between them, perhaps to hold them apart), further linking this necklace with the daily journey of the sun.
