Rising Sun

Shibata Zeshin Japanese

Not on view

In the Japanese landscape painting tradition, a bright red orb represents the rising sun, especially of the New Year. A scroll such as this would have been suitable for a display alcove (tokonoma) in the spring season. Zeshin is known to have created several compositions on this theme.
