Nkoko Ngombo

Yaka people

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 681

Among the Yaka people this instrument is both a symbol and an implement of the ngaanga ngoombu diviner whose image it may represent. The central hair crest stretching from front to back is said to be modeled after a hair style, and the downcast eyes are a sign of the diviner's inner vision.
