Taegum (대금 )

Korean

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 681

This is the largest of the Korean transverse flutes and is made of a rare bamboo believed to have evil qualities. A membrane protected by a metal plate buzzes as the flute is played. Red wax coats the interior to prevent rot.
