Designer Emile Decoeur French

Not on view

Decoeur was fascinated by traditional Chinese celadon glazing, especially for the tonal variations created by the buildup of the glaze in hollows and diffusion in areas in relief. Here, he modernized the ancient technique by applying a pale gray glaze to a stylized classical form, the entire surface of which is covered with small tightly spaced squares; the effect is one of cool, modern abstraction tempered by an ancient warmth and richness.
