James Thrall Soby. "Genesis of a Collection." Art in America 49, no. 1 (1961), p. 69, states that in 1931 and 1932 he bought a total of seven Matisses from the 1920s, often trading one for another, and eventually selling them all, adding "sometimes I regret having sold the Matisses".
