Jar with Four Lug Handles

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 451

Abbasid artists sometimes applied the motifs and techniques developed in imitating imported Chinese stoneware bowls to other vessels, such as this jug. The decoration consists of a painted surface in green and cobalt blue on a white ground familiar from the imitated bowls. A cypress-like tree in green below each handle alternates with a foliate tree in blue. The motifs extend from the opening to halfway down the body and the entire composition bound at the base by a double line of scallops.
