Bertrand was a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Regnault (1754–1829) and exhibited at the Paris Salon between 1796 and 1817. The signature is over a dark area and is now difficult to decipher but has been read as Bertrand since 1952. This work, like the other miniature by this artist in The Met (42.150.15), dates from about 1810.
