(15.4 x 11.4 cm) This small brush drawing articulates the saint's ascetic figure in terms of broad areas of shadow and light, and with agitated contour strokes. It is part of a well-known series of individual representations of Christ and the apostles ("Apostolado") in half-length, all in the same scale and drawing technique. The drawings appear to have been conceived as finished works in and of themselves, and may have served a devotional purpose. The attribution of the "Apostolado" series has wavered between Herrera the Elder and his son Francisco de Herrera "El Mozo" (the Younger; 1627-1685), although the scale of critical opinion presently tips in favor of the father.
