Sword Handle

Dayak people

Not on view

This handle for a sword (mandau) from northern Borneo is carved from deer antler. A grip of plaited fiber covers the shaft, and the distal portion is dipped in black resin. The handle is carved in the form of the head of a European sailor with a shallow brimmed flat-topped cap with chin strap and the word "NAVY" inscribed on the forehead. The facial features are carved in low relief and a collar with a tie is shown in incised lines on the neck.
