Frederick H. Evans

Edward J. Steichen American, born Luxembourg
Mounted by Frederick H. Evans British

Not on view

In a circle of self-referentiality, this photograph shows a photographer observing a photograph of a photographer – Frederick Evans studying a portrait of F. Holland Day impersonating Christ. Pure description becomes a form of poetics, demonstrating that photography, in its myriad reflections, often represents little but itself. This work was in Evans's personal collection; he designed the decorative mount himself.
