Terracotta lekythos (oil flask)

Attributed to the Workshop of the Nikon Painter

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 157

On the shoulder and body, palmette-lotos ornament

Nonfigural motifs could be handled in quite different ways. It is useful to compare the fluid palmettes and stylized lotoses around the body. In addition to being decorative in their own right, these zones always emphasize the various parts of the shape.
