Man with a Mixing Bowl

Joseph Willems Flemish

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 512

This man with a mixing bowl may have been an assistant in one of the Flemish studios where Joseph Willems was employed. Modeled from life, the large-scale terracotta renders its subject in vivid detail. It is a key piece of evidence for Willems before his work for Chelsea (he evidently brought it with him from Brussels; his work apart from Chelsea models is virtually unknown.)
