Panel

Charles Lepec French

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 556

Trained as a painter, Charles Lepec is best-known today for his work in enamel. This decorative panel framing the portrait medallion of Mabel Morrison, wife of the English collector Alfred Morrison (1821–1897) and a patron of the artist, illustrates that he was a virtuoso carver as well.

Panel, Charles Lepec (French, Paris 1830–after 1888), Boxwood, gilt-metal, painted ivory, mounted on gold velvet in a wooden and metal mounted frame, French, Reux
