Case (part of a traveling set)

French, Strasbourg

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 545

This unusually shaped case was specifically created for the safekeeping of a gilt-silver covered bowl and stand, or écuelle, in which hot broth was served during the elaborate dressing ritual known as the toilette. The écuelle was made by a Strasbourg silversmith—either Joachim-Frédéric Kirstein I or Jean-Frédéric Krug.
