On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 544

Drawn from the Old Testament book of Genesis and formerly titled Abimelech, King of the Philistines, the enamel reproduces an engraving by Étienne Delaune (1518/19–1583) based on an illustration by Bernard Salomon (ca. 1508–ca. 1561) for Claude Paradin's book of verse Quadrins historiques de la Bible, published in Lyon by Jean de Tournes in 1553. The tiny figure of Abimelech appears at the upper right.
