Evening hat

Designer Elsa Schiaparelli Italian

Not on view

Millicent Rogers, the original owner of this hat, was a frequent client and collaborator of Schiaparelli's. Rogers fashion bravado coupled with Schiaparelli's whimsical designs made a perfect fashion relationship. This confection is a chic example of that relationship. Schiaparelli has taken a material commonly used in hats, maline, and crafted it into a fashionable pouf of bows. This design calls for a certain kind of confidence in its wearer, which Rogers was dripping in. It was designed for Schiaparelli's summer 1940 collection, and was worn with a dinner ensemble which is also in the museum's collection (see 2009.300.1169a, b).
