From its earliest years, the Museum has published special exhibition catalogues and guides to the collection. Today it is the leading museum publishing operation in the world, and its award-winning books consistently set the standard for scholarship, production values, and elegant design. The Editorial Department produces about thirty exhibition and collection catalogues and general-audience books each year, as well as educational publications and scholarly periodicals such as the quarterly Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin and the annual Metropolitan Museum Journal. We have recently expanded our program to include new media, notably online catalogues, e-books, and video.
As part of the institution's overall mission, our publications aim to increase the public's awareness of and appreciation for art by presenting insightful discussions of the Museum's collection, informed by the latest scholarship and expressed in clear, accessible, and engaging prose. In addition, we seek to make each of our books an art object in itself, combining handsome, innovative design with the highest degree of manufacturing excellence. Our books are available in The Met Store
and in trade bookstores in the United States and abroad.
