Caselli, a leading painter in Parma, worked alongside Giovanni Bellini and Alvise Vivarini and other painters from 1489 to 1495 on the decoration of the Great Council Hall in the Doge’s Palace in Venice (destroyed 1577). As Caselli is not known as a draftsman, this fine sheet is attributed to him on the basis of comparison with his paintings. The blue and red watercolor accentuates the modeling of the head, with its subtle nuances of light and shade. The tight curls, firmly drawn eyebrows, and small lips are characteristic of Caselli’s figures.
