Le Coq de France

Félix Bracquemond French
Publisher André Marty French

Not on view

A master etcher, famous for his portrayal of birds, Bracquemond here sublimated his skill as a naturalist to the emblematic potential of his subject. This deeply bitten etching bears an explicit political message. The Gallic cock crows to celebrate France's recent alliance with Russia. Perhaps more powerful to contemporary eyes is the artist's rendering of the texture of feathers and talons as well as the distinctive stance and expression of the crowing rooster.
