Bronze griffin attachment

Etruscan

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 170

This heavy, solid-cast griffin was the finial for another object, perhaps an andiron. Originally, the eyes were inlaid with other materials, such as amber and ivory, to create a more lifelike realism.
