Little is known about the origins of these extraordinary textiles, made by the Paris firm of J. Claude Frères. It is possible that the organic quality of their designs derives from a fascination with widely published contemporaneous discoveries in medical science-namely, the development of serums and antibiotics-as the decorative motifs resemble enlargements of microscopic specimens.
