  • Description

Miniature cradles for doll-like images of the Christ Child were popular devotional objects in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and were venerated both in private homes and in convents. This splendid cradle from the Grand Béguinage of Louvain has carved representations of the Nativity and the Adoration of the Magi on either end. The biblical family tree of Christ is illustrated on the coverlet, which is richly embroidered and studded with pearls and enamels.
