One of Claude's most important late paintings is "Coast View with Perseus and the Origin of Coral" (Coke Collection, Holkham Hall, Norfolk), commissioned by his patron, Cardinal Camillo Massimi, and executed in 1674. The Lehman drawing is one of seven known preparatory studies for this work, four of which show the entire composition. The rarely depicted subject is taken from Ovid's "Metamorphoses."
