This ewer represents the epitome of the Khurasani metalworking tradition, in both its lavish ornament and masterful execution. The lobed body was raised from sheet brass. To create the sculptural relief elements, such as the pairs of crowned harpies perched along the shoulder and seated lions on either side of the neck, the metalworker hammered the brass from inside the body, a technique known as repoussé. Every inch of the surface is further enlivened with inlaid decoration.
