  • Description

    Excavated 1923 in a room of the House of the Frescoes at Knossos.

    The blue bird, identified as a rock dove, is perches in rocky landscape with wild pea or vetch, dwarf iris and perhaps wild roses. This scene belongs to the same composition as the blue monkey displayed adjacent to it. Numerous other fragments from the painting were not incorporated in Gillieron's restorations. The original composition may have been a continuous frieze about 5 1/2 meters in length and is thought to have included at least six monkeys, eight birds, three or four waterfalls and several nests with eggs set in the rockwork.

    The original is in the Herakleion Archaeological Museum, Crete.
