The handle consists of a tree trunk terminated at the top by a winged dragon with a leonine face and at the bottom by a griffon-like being with ram’s horns. The spout emerges from the mouth of another horned creature, beneath which appears a Gothic-style Virgin and Child. The neck, ringed with tiny figures in niches, was originally closed with a screw top. The patterns adorning the body relate to bookbindings executed for Henri II (ruled 1547–59).
