Art Bulletin 64 (March 1982), p. 103 n. 54, states that autograph replicas of the artist's Italian views included in Exh. Paris 1973–74, of which this is one, were mounted on blue cardboard and threaded with loops for hanging.
William M. Griswold in The Thaw Collection: Master Drawings and Oil Sketches, Acquisitions Since 1994. Exh. cat., Pierpont Morgan Library. New York, 2002, pp. 148–49, no. 66, ill. (color), states that although this sketch or the version in the Louvre was presumably painted in the studio, both give the impression of having been painted outdoors, which was the artist's aim in other such cases as well; calls the MMA sketch "arguably freer and more boldly conceived" than the Louvre version.
